Or is it Octopodes?

  1. That old Octopus game (with source code) In the summer of 2019 I was teaching kids game programming. This game was the first example written in class so that they learn the basic concepts. You can get the entire source code, along with some class notes, on https://pls.plaureano.com/Coding/files/learn-to-code-a-game-blitzmax-in-minutes.
  2. Download this game from Microsoft Store for Windows 10 Mobile, Windows Phone 8.1, Windows Phone 8. See screenshots, read the latest customer reviews, and compare ratings for Octopus Evolution.
  3. My Nuclear Octopus is what might have happened had I been born a few years earlier and landed a job designing arcade games in 1984. It's loud, it's simple to pick up and it's tough as old badgers. The graphics are crunchy old sprites, something you might see in an old Commodore 64 game, a BBC Micro game or maybe even an 80's arcade.

Hello, octopus fans! We here at Young Horses have felt for a long time now that octopus characters are underrepresented in video games. We had to slam our heads together to think up not just any old octopi, but those that stuck out as the most interesting and memorable.

Did we leave out a video game octopus that you cherish and/or vaguely remember? Leave a comment to point out our egregious error!

#10 – Cthulhu (Cthulhu Saves The World)
Song – Cthulhu's Angels

First up is the undersea lord of madness himself, Cthulhu! (Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!) Definitely the oldest cephalopod on the list, he's appeared in a number of games before, but this was his first outing as a protagonist. He can wield forbidden magic, fly through the vastness of space, crush the minds of mortals through dreams, and set trends in facial tentacle fashion that last for decades. Sadly, he is bumped far down the list for being only somewhat octopus in nature.

Check out the rest of our list after the break!

#9 – Launch Octopus (Megaman X)
Song – Subterranean Base

An artist of underwater combat, and boss of the obligatory water level of Megaman X. Once an accomplished Maverick hunter, Launch Octopus went Maverick himself and took over coastal cities in an attempt to disrupt the world's shipping routes. His arsenal of moves includes shoulder-mounted torpedo launchers, homing piranha missiles, and a deadly whirlpool. Unlike a fleshier octopus, though, he can't grow back his tentacles, so slice them off and he's a limbless pushover!

#8 – Octo-Poosie (Ms. Splosion Man)
Song – Octo-Poosie Cometh

It seems that in the process of being converted into a cyborg by Big Science, the Octo-Poosie lost most of his aquatic abilities. Isn't it adorable how he needs water wings and a big, pink snorkle to keep up his underwater lifestyle? The battle against this behemoth is a trial, and among flailing tentacles, bouncing bombs, and flabby yellow trampolines it's all too easy to lose track of Ms. Splosion Man and let her plummet to a watery grave! You have to feel a bit bad for the guy when you win, though: drowning is an embarrassing defeat for a creature of the deep.

#7 – Octopus (Game and Watch)
Song – Octopus

One of gaming's most classic octopi, his ponderous but unpredictable tentacles will keep you away from that treasure every time. The look on his face seems to convey either boredom or exhaustion, likely from the countless thousands of divers he's lazily drowned. His grand revival in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as the final smash of Mr. Game and Watch kept the tradition alive by staying just and ponderous and impossible to play!

#6 – Squiddicus (Donkey Kong Country Returns)
Song – Stormy Shore

Don't let the name fool you, this spiny-tentacled monstrosity is definitely of the order Octopoda. There you are, playing through an otherwise unremarkable water level, when suddenly the music changes and you witness Squiddicus smashing a pirate ship to driftwood in the background. Once he catches sight of the Kongs, he chases them down like they owe him rent! As he hunts, Squiddicus will glare malevolently, crush platforms, and create spiky obstacles out of nowhere. Despite the build-up, you never get to sock it to Squiddicus's big, squishy headsack…I suppose a fearsome creature like him isn't so easily beaten!

#5 – Eight-Arms (Ecco the Dolphin)
Song – Undercaves

Words cannot express my hatred for you, oh nameless octopus from Ecco the Dolphin. Would that I could hold my breath forever that your tentacle might lack its deadly power. Alas.

#4 – Octoman (F Zero)
Song – Octoman's Theme

The original humanoid octopus father. Hailing from the planet Takora, he's on a mission to win the Grand Prix and give a billion space-bucks in winnings to his failing government. Why? Because he wants to make a better world for his kids! To help him on his quest, the Takorans scrapped together the Deep Claw, a ship with fair speed and armor, but a lack of control. His ship is also specially outfitted to make use of his strange body, and Octoman claims that his extra pairs of arms give him an edge over the competition! How that matters in a hovercraft race, I have no idea… The internship (itch) (n.s.chaitanya) mac os.

#3 – King Kaliente (Super mario Galaxy)
Song – King Kaliente

Apparently, Kaliente is the king of the Octoombas. He's like an antithesis to all other cephalopods on this list, given that he lives on a planet made of molten lava and does his darnedest to set Mario ablaze. He can spit fireballs, summon meteors, and he gets mighty mad when you knock off his crown. You have to wonder what his mustache must be made of to survive so long submerged in magma.

#2 – Octillery (Pokemon)
Song – Surf Theme

Anybody who's studied biology can tell you that a remora with sufficient combat experience morphs into a cross between an octopus and an anti-air flak cannon. Science aside, Octillery is a slow, hard-headed water pokemon with a firm grip. It keeps six of its tentacles bunched up behind its body to brace itself for when it fires the massive gun that is its facehole. With Octillery's expertise in projectile weaponry, it can learn every kind of ‘beam' attack that there is…except for Solar Beam. That kind of halfway attitude is exactly what keeps you from being number one, Octillery! Come back when you've learned how to weaponize sunlight, you lazy whimp!

#1 – Ultros (Final Fantasy VI)
Song – Grand Finale(Fan)Song – Ultros Boogie

'Don't tease the octopus, kids!' Immortal words from the greatest cephalopod known to gaming. An ineffectual recurring comedy villain from Final Fantasy 6, Ultros is a purple octopus with a big mouth and a sense of humor. He's prone to appearing out of nowhere, trying to eat everybody, cracking jokes, and then running away like a coward. His most notable villainous attempt came when he tried to drop a one-ton weight on the lead singer of an opera mid-show, and the ensuing battle between Ultros and the party was quickly improvised into the script! Eventually, Ultros gives up being a bad guy and settles into working as a receptionist to pay off his debts. While he's a miserable failure of an octopus, he is also an unforgettable character, and continues to make appearances in Final Fantasy games to this day.

Honorable Mention – Octodad (Octodad)
Song – Octopus I Love You

I mean, come on, this is the Octodad blog!
